Before you start
- A Pidge account, with your site added under Websites in the inbox.
- Your website ID. It's on the same page, in the snippet under Code for your website.
- An administrator login for WordPress.
The plugin is in review for the WordPress plugin directory. Until it's listed, use the snippet with a header and footer plugin instead.
Install the plugin
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for Pidge. Find Pidge Live Chat, click Install Now, then Activate.
- Go to Settings → Pidge Live Chat.
- Paste your website ID and save.
The same settings page has a few options:
- Hide the chat from administrators, so you don't see it while you work on the site.
- Hide it on single pages of post types you choose.
- Tell Pidge the name and email of logged-in WordPress users, so your team knows who they're talking to. This is off until you turn it on.
Without the Pidge plugin
Any plugin that adds code to every page will do. A common one is WPCode, listed in the plugin directory as Insert Headers and Footers by WPCode.
- Install and activate WPCode from Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Go to Code Snippets → Header & Footer.
- Paste the snippet into the Footer box and click Save Changes.
<script>window.$pidge = []; window.PIDGE_WEBSITE_ID = "YOUR-WEBSITE-ID";</script> <script src="https://app.pidge.chat/client/l.js" async></script>
Your own copy is in the Pidge inbox under Websites, in Code for your website, with your website ID already filled in. Copy it from there.
Avoid pasting it straight into your theme's files. A theme update replaces them, and the chat disappears with your edit. Block themes have no box for this at all.
List your domains in Pidge
The chat only connects on domains you've listed for the website. In the inbox, open
Websites and put each domain on its own line in
Domains. Subdomains are included, so example.com also
covers www.example.com.
Add the domain your site runs on. If you also want the chat on a staging copy with a different address, add that one as well.
Check that it works
- Log out, or open your site in a private window. If you ticked the option to hide the chat from administrators, you won't see it while logged in.
- The chat bubble should be in the bottom corner. Send yourself a message and answer it from the inbox.
- In the inbox, the website's Not installed yet label goes away after the first visit from a listed domain.
If the bubble shows but the chat won't connect, the domain you're on isn't in the website's list in Pidge. If there's no bubble at all, the snippet isn't on the page, or the platform is still serving an older copy of it.
Using a caching plugin? Clear its cache after you save, or visitors may get pages from before the chat was added.
